On Friday, September 11th at 1:00PM PST via ZOOM, the Friends of Mt Diablo Peace & Justice Center hosted a guest presentation by Paul Fitzgerald and Elizabeth Gould, the husband and wife team who wrote two blockbuster books: “Invisible History: Afghanistan’s Untold Story” and “Crossing Zero: The AfPak War at the Turning Point of the American Empire”.
The pair document how the US policy promoting conservative Islamic fundamentalists undermined the progressive Afghanistan government beginning in 1978. The destabilization campaign led to the intervention of Soviet troops as planned by Jimmy Carter’s National Security Advisor Zbigniew Brzezinski. The consequences have been devastating and continue today. Paul Fitzgerald and Elizabeth Gould first went to Afghanistan in 1981 and have reported for CBS News, Nightline and The MacNeil/Lehrer NewsHour. Their documentary Between Three Worlds was broadcast by PBS.
